"Norma" la Opera din Brasov

““
Norma-la-Opera-din-Brasov-cu-Ioana-Margarit
Norma”, by Vincenzo Bellini, is a typical Italian opera about war, faithlessness and love. It is about a high-priestess in Gaul (Norma played by Ioana Margarit) who falls in love with a Roman pro-consul (Pollione played by Sorin Lupu) and has his children, which is punishable by death. Pollione falls in love with one of the priestesses (Adalgisa played by Cristiana Radu), but she is too faithful to Norma.

The opera is being performed in The Brasov Opera, a small almost unnoticeable building. Most of the building is taken up by its only hall. The hall is roomy and with very comfortable red seats that are necessary for the two and a half hour opera, unusual thing about the Brasov Opera, considering the 8 lei (1.5 pounds), is that it is a very well looked after establishment. The place looks like it was built only yesterday with everything new and sparkling, which enhances Norma to no ends, because poor exterior and interior can significantly lower the observer’s initial outlook and therefore lower the expectation of the opera and make the whole experience less enjoyable.

Norma starts, before the curtains are drawn, with a small piece called “Dell’ aura tua profetica” which, by itself, is quite forgettable.

The “Norma” is opened by Oroveso (played by Dan Popescu) a ‘bass’, who lacks almost everything else other than bass, with the words appearing to be half formed at the best of times, and guttural sounds at worst of times. Pollione is on the other hand a very capable tenor with strong loud head voice that carries well and could be reaching high C. Although a good voice, Sorin Lupu lacks the actions, the movement and the emotion that is requisite of the main protagonist.

The soprano, Ioana Margarit, posses a colotura voice with powerful dramatic qualities and probably manages to reach the note F6. Ms Margarit manages to sing one of the gems of Italian ‘Bel canto’, the piece “Casta Diva”. Unlike Mr. Lupu, Ioana Margarit pours her heart and soul into her role as Norma making her arguable one of the stars of “Norma”.

Adalgisa, a Contralto, manages to play her role very well with a good clear like water voice that manages to alternate between high and low notes with both ease and grace. The acting is good and Cristiana Radu manages to perform with, and even rise to vocal greatness of, Ioana Margarit in duets such as “Sola, furtiva al tempio and “Deh, con te, con te li prendi”, and even the “Ah! di qual sei tu vittima” a terzetto with Norma and Pollione was sung with little difficulty. “Ah! di qual sei tu vittima” is done with such grace by the three singers that it is one of the jewels in the crown that is “Norma”.

Another such jewel is the “Guerra, guerra! le galliche selve” – a powerful war song that has undoubtly sent shivers down the spines of almost every observer, Norma’s high voice was aided by the emotionally arousing music and otherwise disappointing chorus.

One of the biggest minuses about impeccable “Norma”, is the supporting extras who other than adding movement to cheap and bland looking scenery and supporting Norma in “Guerra, guerra! le galliche selve” do very little else. As a mater of fact through out the two and a half hour opera, collectively, the extras must have sung for about five minutes.

Even though the opera was in Italian with Romanian subtitles the plot is not too difficult to follow – leaving me clueless only several times, as in general the acting is quite good, although it’s advisable to read about “Norma” on the internet before going, as that will make opera more interesting.

Overall, despite the poor support and slightly rough-around-the-edges lead characters, “Norma” brims with life, quality and reality making watching and hearing the opera a pleasure. It feels like I am there in Gaul during the Roman times, that I am some sort of a time traveler sitting in a chair watching how the life of Norma, Pollione and Adalgisa unfolds with passion and emotion. I thoroughly recommend the opera to everyone who enjoys the opera and everything it entails, and for only 8 lei it’s a crime not to go.Norma”, by Vincenzo Bellini, is a typical Italian opera about war, faithlessness and love.
